Pagham Harbour grassland plan to attract lapwing

Plans to establish a breeding population of wading birds on a Sussex nature reserve have been put forward.

West Sussex County Council wants to make improvements at Pagham Harbour near Chichester to attract greater numbers of lapwing and redshank.

The work, which will take place throughout September, includes excavating ditches and drains to create areas of wet grassland.

Lapwing numbers have declined in the UK by almost 50% since 1970.
