Tributes have been paid to a teenage girl from Sussex who died on holiday in Portugal.

Mia Knight, 16, is believed to have fallen unconscious while swimming in the sea at the Algarve resort of Portimao on Wednesday.

The teenager, who went to Hove Park School, was described as a "gorgeous and lovely girl".

Flowers, cards and a T-shirt covered in messages of condolence have been left at the school building on Nevill Road.

Mia had been due to receive her GCSE results on Thursday.

Vigil by friends

Head teacher Derek Trimmer said: "Everybody in the school community is going to be devastated by this news.

"Our thoughts and our feelings are with the family at this very, very, very difficult time."

The school said friends of Mia would be offered counselling when term starts in September.

A vigil was also held by friends in a Hove park on Friday evening.

Cruz Martins, harbourmaster at Portimao, said a lifeguard pulled Mia from the water and tried to revive her, with help from medical staff.

A spokesman for the Foreign and Commonwealth Office said it was offering consular assistance.
