Stopped car leads police to home alone girl in Crawley

The mother of a four-year-old girl who was found home alone in Crawley is being sought by police and social services in West Sussex.

The girl was discovered after two 16-year-old boys were arrested in the Maidenbower area of the town on Tuesday on suspicion of driving offences.

One of the teenagers was arrested on suspicion of being carried in a stolen vehicle and child neglect.

The child is currently in the care of West Sussex County Council.

Sussex Police, who believe the mother is away on holiday, said the child was known to one of the boys and had been found home alone as a result of their inquiries.

The teenagers were stopped by police in Maidenbower Drive at 01:00 BST. The second boy was arrested on suspicion of taking a car without the owner's consent.

Both were released on bail until 27 September.
