New Eastbourne junior school opens its doors

A new Sussex primary school created by the amalgamation of two others has opened its doors for the first time.

Heron Park Primary School, in Eastbourne, is on the site of the former Highfield Junior School, which closed along with Hampden Park Infants.

In a total project costing £2.5m, significant improvements were made to the new school over the summer holiday.

Nick Bennett, of East Sussex County Council, said he had high hopes for the school, which opened on Thursday.

"It has a new name, a new identity and is a new school," the councillor said.

"We think it will build on the strong links that already existed between the two former schools and be an excellent place for young people to grow, learn and fulfil their potential."
