A 63-year-old man has died of gunshot wounds in hospital, hours after his wife fled their home in West Sussex claiming she had been attacked.

Police were called to a house in Horsham Road, Littlehampton, at about 06:40 BST after the woman fled to a neighbour's house.

Police said the man was seen with a gun on the roof of the garage.

Officers heard three shots being fired at 07:25 BST. They went on to the garage roof and found the wounded man.

Det Con Insp Nick May said the man was a registered firearms licence holder and they were not seeking anybody else in connection with the shooting.

Specialist firearms officers were heading to the scene at the time of the shooting. A force spokeswoman said no shots were fired by police.

The man was taken by Kent Air Ambulance to the Royal London Hospital, Whitechapel, but died at 10:30 BST.

The area was cordoned off during the incident and Horsham Road remains closed.

Police said the woman was shaken but uninjured. She is staying with relatives and is being supported by police family liaison officers.

The Independent Police Complaints Commission has been informed as a matter of course.
