A solicitor from Hove has raised £5,000 for a children's charity by cycling the length of Death Valley in the US.

Rich Bates spent five days cycling along the valley, in the Mojave Desert, California, in aid of The Edward Starr Charitable Trust.

The valley is one of the hottest and driest places in the Western hemisphere.

He completed the 270-mile (434km) trip, which included a 17,000ft (5,181m) ascent, on Saturday.

"It was incredibly tough," he said.

"The last three days were at least 55 miles (88km) a day and the equivalent of cycling over Ben Nevis each day. Yesterday at 5,500ft (1,676m) we were cycling through snow.

"I'm physically absolutely fine. It's completely surprising as I had been pretty poorly in the few weeks before I left."
