Sussex Police drop Hailsham 'masked rape' investigation

Detectives have dropped an investigation into a reported rape of a teenager in Hailsham.

The 18-year-old claimed she had been attacked by a masked man while walking near the Diplocks industrial estate, in South Road, on 4 September.

Sussex Police said after a "comprehensive" two-and-a-half month investigation there was no evidence to show an attack took place.

Police have no plans to prosecute the woman.

Det Ch Insp Jeff Riley, of the Surrey and Sussex major crime team, said: "Support has been provided for the woman and her family, and there are no plans to prosecute or take any other action against her.

"Allegations of this nature are always taken very seriously and we continue to encourage women to come forward and report offences committed against them."
