Police have been given more time to question eight men and three women arrested after a man was murdered in West Sussex on Christmas Day.

Worthing magistrates granted the application in connection with the death of a 38-year-old Lithuanian man in Beach Road, Littlehampton.

Police said those detained are being held on suspicion of murder and are from Lithuania.

A local woman, aged 32, has been bailed pending further inquiries.

Police said an interpreter is working with detectives. The victim's parents have not yet been traced.

Tight knit community

A post-mortem examination carried out on Monday confirmed the man died from a single stab wound to the heart at about 21:00 GMT.

The victim had been at a party in Beach Road. The people being questioned were also at the party or were in the immediate area at the time.

Det Chief Insp Jeff Riley said police believe all the people involved are from a tight-knit community and are known to each other.

"Custody time has been extended to allow us to continue to progress the investigation and carry out further interviews in relation to the circumstances surrounding this man's death," he said.

"Extensive enquiries are being made and uniformed officers are in Littlehampton speaking to people and urging anyone with information to come forward."
