False sex assault claim student cautioned

A 17-year-old girl who said she had been sexually assaulted at the University of Sussex has received a caution for wasting police time.

The girl had claimed she was attacked on the Falmer campus on 15 February, but she was arrested after police began investigating the incident.

She has now admitted she made up the allegation.

Det Insp Mick Jones, who led the investigation, urged victims of sexual assault to continue contacting police.

He said: "I want to reassure the public that all allegations of sexual assault are taken extremely seriously and, as in this case, a large number of police resources are used to gather all available evidence."
