Sussex Police retirement policy formally revoked

A policy of making police officers retire after 30 years of service as part of savings at Sussex Police has been formally revoked.

Sussex Police Authority (SPA) agreed the move at its annual meeting.

The policy had been approved under regulation A19 of the Police Pensions Regulations 1987, in May 2011. During the past 12 months, 85 officers left.

SPA chairman Steve Waight it had been a difficult decision to use A19 and one that was not taken lightly.

He said it was a "very blunt tool" but had been essential to make sure the force tackled its funding shortfall.
