Hastings and Eastbourne apprenticeship scheme beats target

A scheme to tackle youth unemployment in two East Sussex towns has been hailed a success after more than 300 apprenticeships were created.

Organisers had originally hoped to create 100 apprenticeships in 100 days in Hastings and Eastbourne.

However, their target was reached within 31 days, before going on to a total of 331.

Hastings Borough Council said it is not clear how many of the apprenticeships will lead to permanent jobs.

Council leader Jeremy Birch said: "We can't expect employers to give an absolute commitment."
