A man has appeared in court charged with the murder of his wife in Brighton on Sunday night.

Ty Medland, 25, of Cavell Avenue, Peacehaven, appeared before Brighton magistrates charged with murdering Samantha Medland, 24.

He was remanded in custody to Lewes Crown Court, where he is due to appear on Thursday.

Mrs Medland died in hospital after suffering stab wounds in Queen Square, in Brighton city centre.

Her mother, Amelia Shah, said from the family home in Luton: "Her untimely death has touched so many people."

She added: "My daughter Sam was always a ray of sunshine to those she met.

"She will be greatly missed by us all."

Police have appealed for witnesses.
