West Sussex County Council staff strike over pay

Staff at West Sussex County Council's contact centre have been on strike in a dispute over a pay offer.

About 80 people at the Bognor Regis site, which handles inquiries from the public, took part in Tuesday's action.

Unison said staff had not had a pay rise for three years and employer Serco had offered a £65 payment this year.

The contractor said it was "extremely disappointed" with the decision. Unison said it was "grossly profitable" and could afford to pay.

Dave Johnson, from the union, said: "What we have reached here is a breaking point, these workers are getting into debt.

"Not having a wage increase for three years means they cannot afford to pay their bills."

A spokeswoman for Serco said: "Every effort is being made to minimise disruption to the public.

"Less than half of the company's 84 employees have voted to take action."
