Missing Brighton swimmer search scaled down overnight
A search for a swimmer who went missing off Brighton beach has been scaled down.
A member of the public called 999 after hearing the man shouting for help near the Western Arm of Brighton Marina, just before 14:45 BST.
The RNLI lifeboat was dispatched, but the man had disappeared under the water.
Emergency services spent the afternoon searching the scene, and have scaled it down due to darkness.
A Maritime and Coastguard Agency spokesman said the area would be monitored overnight and another search made at first light.
David Williams, Solent Coastguard watch manager, said: "The lifeboat and helicopter were on scene really quickly this afternoon and everyone involved did everything they could to find this person.
"There will be a watch on the area where he was last seen overnight but this is increasingly looking like a tragic accident."
