Girl admits Brighton rape claim was false

A 14-year-old girl who claimed she was raped in a field in Brighton has since admitted no such attack took place, Sussex Police have said.

The teenager told detectives she was approached and raped by a man at the northern end of Sheep Walk in Ovingdean, Brighton, on 29 October.

Det Chief Insp Carwyn Hughes said an extensive and thorough investigation had been carried out.

It was now clear no such incident took place, he said.

Counselling support

Local officers and Surrey and Sussex Major Crime Team have investigated the girl's claim.

There have been no other reported incidents in the area before or since 29 October.

No police action is being taken against the girl who made the report and she has been given access to welfare and counselling support.

"We appreciate the public's support in this investigation and I want to emphasise that we will always investigate fully all such reports," said Mr Hughes.
