An 11-year-old girl was raped while walking home from school in Crawley.

The girl was pulled into a footpath between Blackwater Lane and Balcombe Road by a man who pushed her into bushes and raped her, police said.

Sussex Police said the attack happened at around 15:00 BST on 22 September but the girl has only recently come forward and reported it.

An e-fit of the man has been released. He is aged about 40, with ginger and grey hair, and stubble.

'Extremely distressing'

He was wearing a black fleece beanie hat and knee length khaki coloured coat at the time of the attack.

Det Insp James Norbury, of Sussex Police, said: "This was an extremely distressing incident for the young victim who has only just built up the courage to report it and she and her family are now being supported by specially trained officers.

"It was light and a busy time of day so we are appealing to anyone who might have been in that area of Maidenbower around 15:00."
