Two men died from their injuries and two others were hurt when their car hit a tree and flipped onto its roof.

The men, aged 21 and 22, were passengers in the back of a BMW which crashed in High Beeches Lane, Handcross, West Sussex, at about 22:00 GMT on Wednesday.

Sussex Police said both men were taken to hospital but later died.

The 20-year-old male driver is being treated for serious injuries at the Royal Sussex County Hospital.

'Very shocking'

Local resident Jay Cooper said: "When we got here we found the car on its roof and Ian, the doctor, and myself checked the car for passengers and we found two bodies in the back.

"It was very shocking. It's not a scene you want to see ever again."

A 16-year-old girl, who was travelling in the front passenger seat, was taken to the same hospital for treatment for minor injuries and later released.

Sussex Police said two of the people in the car were from Lindfield and two from Haywards Heath.

The force has asked for anyone with information about the crash to contact officers.

Ch Insp Phil Nicholas said two people had lost their lives in a very serious crash.

"We are keen to speak to anyone who may have been travelling on the road between Turners Hill and Handcross last night around 10 o'clock who may have seen the BMW car."
