Police appeal after woman raped on Crawley cycle path

A woman was raped on a cycle path next to a busy road in Crawley while on her way home from a night out.

The 18-year-old was attacked on Saturday while walking along the path off Haslett Avenue East in Three Bridges, Sussex Police said.

The victim was found "staggering" along the road by a passer-by shortly before 23:30 BST, police added.

She was treated by paramedics and taken to a specialist unit that supports victims of rape and sexual assault.

Detective Inspector Rob Walker said: "She is shocked and upset but thankfully does not have serious physical injuries and we are giving her support."

Crime scene investigators are examining the area for any evidence that could identify the attacker.

Rob Walker said: "We believe the rape happened at around 11pm but we are still trying to pinpoint exactly when because the victim is understandably very shaken by her ordeal."

Anyone who used the cycle path between Furnace Green and Haslett Avenue East on Saturday night is urged to come forward.

Police are also keen to hear from anyone else who heard or saw anything suspicious.
