A 37-year-old mother of three who was injured when a car ploughed into her family has died.

She and her partner were walking with their children - one of them a baby in a pram - when the VW Beetle hit them before crashing into a cafe.

The man suffered a serious head injury in the crash, in Upper Lake, Battle. The children and female driver were treated for shock and minor injuries.

Customers were trapped inside the cafe after Sunday afternoon's crash.

None of those inside were injured.

The woman died in hospital earlier, Sussex Police said.

'Really brave'

Angela Knowles, a witness at the scene who helped the children involved, said: "I took the little boy away. He was crying.

"He was on the floor. He said he'd hurt his shoulder but he didn't seem too bad and he got up himself. And I just sat with him

"I just feel so sad for the poor boys because they were being so brave, especially the older one who was really trying to hold it together.

"He was a really brave boy. And it was just so awful that they lose their mum."

The woman who died has not yet been named by police.

Officers said they were continuing to investigate the incident and urged any witnesses to contact them.

Sgt Dan Pitcher said police wanted to talk to anyone who may have seen what happened or noticed the black VW being driven shortly beforehand.

And Sgt Peter Verney said: "Our thoughts are very much with the family at what is a very difficult time."
