Police are trying to solve the mystery of a shoe found at the site where a woman driver believes she hit a pedestrian.

The woman called police on Friday evening to say she thought she had hit someone, but could not find a casualty although her car was damaged.

Cleveland Police scrambled the force's helicopter to search the area at the A174 near to Bankfields in Eston.

All that was found at the "crash site" was a black, Adidas size four trainer.

A police spokesman said: "Officers are uncertain as to whether this shoe is connected to the incident, however, as part of the investigation police would like to trace the owner of this shoe to check that all is well.

"There are currently no missing people reported to police in the Redcar and Cleveland district."
