Further police jobs on Teesside could be outsourced to a private company.

In July, Cleveland Police Authority signed a deal with Steria involving 470 support workers, including control centre staff.

Now it considering extending this to cover other roles, some currently undertaken by police officers.

The authority, which faces budget cuts of more than 20%, said it wanted to do everything possible to protect front-line policing.

Councillor Dave McLuckie, who chairs the authority, said: "We are determined to do everything possible to protect front-line policing, even though it is clear that overall police numbers will have to be reduced.

"That means maximising the number of officers available for the front line, and that can only be achieved by reducing the number involved in support activities which can be undertaken by civilian staff."

Job protection

The initial deal with Steria was aimed a making savings of £50m over 10 years.

Mr McLuckie added that the interests of staff were also a priority.

"The agreement with Steria provides for the protection of the terms and conditions of transferred staff, together with a guarantee of no compulsory redundancies for the length of the contract," he said.

"Those same protections would apply to any other staff who might be transferred if we did agree to extend the scope of the agreement."
