A flag which flew above Redcar during the fight to save steelmaking is to be lowered after a deal secured the future of the industry in the town.

Thai company SSI signed a deal to buy Tata Steel's Teesside Cast Products, formerly Corus, to secure hundreds of jobs and create hundreds more.

The site had been mothballed in 2010 after a major contract fell through.

A Save our Steel flag flying over Redcar and Cleveland Council town hall is due to be taken down later.

Former steelworker and council leader George Dunning said he was delighted the flag was being lowered.

He said: "We never wanted to have to raise the Save Our Steel flag in the first place, but after we did it became something that epitomised the area's determination not to let decades of proud industrial heritage die."
