Four hurt in five-vehicle A19 crash

A woman was airlifted to hospital with head injuries and three other people taken to hospital after a five-vehicle collision on the A19.

Emergency services were called to the scene near the Dalton Piercy turnoff, near Hartlepool, on Sunday afternoon.

The collision involved four cars and a van and the road was closed for more than three hours.

Police urged people who were in a silver Mercedes who may have witnessed the crash to contact them.

The injured woman was taken to Middlesbrough's James Cook University Hospital by the Cleveland Police helicopter.

Two men and a woman were taken to the University Hospital of North Tees.

Police said a number of other people were also injured but did not need hospital treatment.
