Three people, including a seven-year-old girl and her father died in two separate house fires in the North East.

Jessica and Philip Braithwaite, 49, died after a blaze at a property in Hawthorn Road, Redcar, on Monday.

A 53-year-old woman was also killed in a fire at a house in Granville Terrace, Binchester, near Bishop Auckland on Tuesday morning.

Police and fire service officials are investigating both incidents, which are not thought to be suspicious.

Emergency services were called to Hawthorn Road at about 2300 BST on Monday. Cleveland Fire Brigade said there were reports of people trapped.

Jessica, her father and a nine-year-old girl were taken to Middlesbrough's James Cook University Hospital.

Cleveland Police said they died later and the nine-year-old is in a critical condition.

She was transferred to hospital in Hull, where she is being treated in a specialist unit.

Fire crews were called to Binchester just after 0830 BST on Tuesday, where a woman, who has yet to be named, was pronounced dead at the scene.
