The future of Wynyard Planetarium, the only one of its kind on Teesside, has been secured - although operating hours will be slightly reduced.

Stockton Council had been reviewing ways of maintaining the attraction while cutting running costs.

There were hopes a community management trust could have been formed with regional astronomical societies, but none was in a position to do so.

The council will now continue as owner and operator.

There will be a series of public shows and star-gazing events in the coming months.

Councillor Mary Womphrey, cabinet member for arts, leisure and culture, said: "As with services across the whole authority, the planetarium has been reviewed as we look at ways of making efficiency savings.

"It is wonderful we have found a way to maintain the facility which is sustainable in the longer term."
