A teenager died when his moped left the road and hit a lamppost in a County Durham village.

The crash happened outside the Plough Inn, at Hutton Henry, near Peterlee, on Saturday.

Luke Casson, 16, from Hutton Henry, was thrown from his bike and died later in North Tees Hospital in Stockton.

Colin Reid, headteacher at St Hild's school, Hartlepool, where Luke attended, said his death had left pupils "shocked and devastated".

Hundreds of people have posted comments paying tribute to him on Facebook.

'Lovely lad'

Mr Reid said: "He was a lovely lad and a very popular member of Year 11. Whenever he went on trips or visits he was always the perfect ambassador and represented the school very well."

He said prayers had been said for Luke and his family and there were plans to open a book of condolence for people to pay their personal tributes.

He said trained staff would be available to support students.

A Durham Police spokesman said the incident happened on an open stretch of road shortly after 1800 BST and led to the road being closed for three hours.

No other vehicles were involved, but officers have appealed for any witnesses to come forward.
