Darlington residents warned over council refund scam

Trading standards officers are warning Darlington residents not to fall victim to a council tax refund scam.

It follows a number of reports of people being contacted by companies claiming links with the Treasury.

The caller tells them they are due a "substantial rebate from the government" under a "good payer" scheme and asks for personal and bank details.

The council has said it deals with all council tax matters and there is no such general rebate initiative.
