Skateboarders' safety warning over slope by golf club

Children have been warned not to play on a slope near Hartlepool Golf Club.

Skateboarders as young as four years old have been seen playing on the eroded piece of land which has a 40ft (12m) drop in places.

Police say the area is dangerous and have warned it is only a matter of time before someone is hurt.

Graham Laidlay, the club manager, said: "We're working with the police, we've put up signs and a fence, we want to put the onus on the parents.

'Matter of time'

"It's not our land, and we're doing everything we can to stop children playing on the dune. It's where our land stops, so they're running up from the dune and then jumping off the top.

"What they don't realise is that this starts the sand moving, and that it's only a matter of time until the land slides and covers someone. It can happen in seconds.

"We had an accident nearly two years ago, where a kid jumped off the top of the dune and got stuck.

"It took the police, ambulance, mountain rescue and air ambulance to get him out, fortunately the tide was out - but we don't want things like that to happen again."
