Man arrested over death of Wheatley Hill pedestrian

A teenager has been arrested in connection with the death of a 30-year-old pedestrian in County Durham.

Brian Ainscough was struck by a Citroen on the B1279 at Shotton Colliery, near Peterlee, on Tuesday afternoon.

The 30-year-old, from Wordsworth Avenue in Wheatley Hill, was pronounced dead soon after his arrival at hospital.

The 19-year-old man, arrested at the scene on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving, was later released pending further inquiries.

Police are appealing for witnesses to the incident at about 1500 BST.
