Taxi rank marshal scheme pilot in Middlesbrough

A taxi marshal scheme has been introduced in Middlesbrough to try and curb trouble and help revellers get home safely.

The marshals will patrol taxi stands in Wilson Street on Friday and Saturday nights during a three-month trial.

The scheme has been introduced after complaints of disorder and heavy traffic in the area.

The marshals will be in contact with the CCTV police control room and be on duty from midnight until 04:00 BST.

A spokesman for Middlesbrough Council said: "Their primary role will be to ensure the safety and security of people using taxis, including members of the public and the taxi drivers themselves.

"They will ensure the orderly organisation of taxi queues and promote good conduct from the public to ensure passenger safety."
