North Ormesby market reopens after £1m revamp

A historic Teesside market has reopened following a major refurbishment programme aimed at revitalising trade.

The council carried out a £1m improvement programme in a bid to stem the decline of the twice-weekly event at North Ormesby.

The square now features dedicated pitches and parking areas.

There have also been improvements to the surrounding area, including investment in the shops in Kings Road and Beaumont Road.

Arthur Moody, chairman of the Middlesbrough branch of the National Market Traders Federation, said: "The market isn't just a place to go shopping for bargains, it is a social activity, an opportunity to meet people and catch up with friends.

"It's a way of shopping that is being lost and I hope that the work to upgrade the Market Square will provide a home for both the market traders and their customers for many years to come."
