Bogus calls warning to Darlington residents

Bogus callers have been targeting residents in Darlington to try to get personal information, a council warned.

Darlington Borough Council said a number of people had received calls from people claiming to be from its housing benefits team.

Callers have asked for details including National Insurance number, date of birth and income details and then hung up.

The council said if its staff did ring they would not ask security questions.

Council leader said: "Bogus callers and scam artists often prey on the most vulnerable in society and will try to catch people out so they give personal details away.

"A genuine caller will not mind you checking who they are so anyone concerned about the identity of someone claiming to be from the council should call us and we can verify their details."
