Proposed Barnard Castle bridge moves a step closer

Plans for a £1.3m suspension bridge over the Tees have moved a step closer to getting the go-ahead.

The proposed bridge at Barnard Castle will be 265m (870ft) long and have a platform offering a panoramic view of the town.

Durham County Council has earmarked £300,000 for design and planning, as well as a public consultation.

The council said it hoped the bridge would boost the local economy by £1.5m a year in tourist trade.

A council spokesman said: "We will keep the public well informed of progress throughout the design and planning stages because the support of both local businesses and residents is crucial to us and to the viability of this project as a whole."
