A fire station, which includes a community centre for young people, has opened its doors on Teesside.

The £1.4m facility in Redcar is home to Cleveland Fire Brigade crews as well as teams from Cleveland Police and Redcar and Cleveland council.

The building, on the site of the old Trunk Road fire station, also has a community centre and fitness suites.

Fire crews will now move from their temporary base at Kirkleatham Business Park.

Ian Hayton, chief fire officer for Cleveland Fire Brigade, described it as a "tremendously exciting new development for the area".

He said: "These building developments will not only vastly improve the accommodation and working conditions for firefighters and staff, but will enable the fire and rescue service to work with partners to deliver young people's services and provide the best possible life chances for the young people of the area."
