A 17-year-old has been arrested after two teenagers died when a people carrier overturned on Teesside.

The incident, involving a Toyota Corolla Verso, happened on the A66 at Thornaby, Stockton, at about 05:43 BST.

The teenager was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and bailed.

Two 17-year-olds were found dead at the scene, police said. Four passengers, also local and teenagers, survived with either minor or no injuries.

They have been released from the James Cook University Hospital.

The A66 was closed eastbound for eight hours to allow for recovery and investigative work to be carried out.

A Cleveland Police spokeswoman said the families of the dead teenagers were being supported by specially trained officers.

Police want to hear from anyone who saw the grey people carrier being driven on Saturday evening or in the early hours.
