Cleveland Police Authority asks for financial support
Cleveland Police Authority says the "signs are good" that it could receive financial support from the government.
Chair Peter Race said the authority was facing difficulties as a result of the continuing investigation into allegations of corruption and misconduct in the force.
Both the chief and deputy chief constable remain suspended on full pay.
A new temporary chief has been brought in and the authority is also funding the inquiry led by Warwickshire Police.
Mr Race said: "We have written to the Home Office, we half expected a straight 'no', but the signs are looking good that we can get some extraordinary and unique financial support.
"We are in a difficult financial situation but it's not terminal, we'll work our way through."
