Guisborough mail delivery office closure plan scrapped

Plans to close a Teesside delivery office have been scrapped, Royal Mail says.

In June it announced it was planning to move the Guisborough operation to Redcar delivery office. It led to a petition amid fears of a poorer service

Royal Mail said it had reviewed its plans and concluded the benefits were no longer as significant as first thought so the office would be kept.

The decision was welcomed by the Communication Workers Union.

Pete Sansum from the union said: "It was just a total nonsense and that was the reason why we had to fight this campaign. Luckily we have come out on top."

Royal Mail's North East regional operations director, Alison Wright, said: "Since the announcement, we have been undertaking detailed planning ahead of the move.

"As part of this process, we constantly review our original plans against a very challenging economic and operational climate.

"As a result, we have concluded that the various benefits of this move are no longer as significant as initially anticipated."
