Woman dies in car crash on A689 in County Durham

A woman has died after a car accident in County Durham.

The crash on Monday just before 11:00 GMT involved three cars on the A689 at the junction of Rushyford and Leasing Thorn in Windlestone.

Elizabeth Morgan, 50, of Abbey Gardens, Willington, suffered fatal injuries and died at the James Cook Hospital in Middlesbrough.

Another driver suffered a punctured lung and fractures to her ribs and arm. The road was closed for five hours.

Left the road

Police believe Ms Morgan's Seat Leon car was overtaking a line of slow-moving traffic when it collided with the rear offside wheel of a Ford Fiesta, continued across on to the opposite carriageway and collided head-on with a Suzuki Vitara.

Both the Seat and Suzuki Vitara left the road.

A man and woman in the Suzuki, both 65 from Rushyford, were injured and are being treated at Darlington Memorial Hospital.

The driver of the Ford Fiesta, a 57-year-old woman from Chilton, was unhurt.
