A high street shop in Country Durham is to be demolished in the new year after its roof collapsed in September.

Shoppers had to be led to safety after staff heard a "cracking noise" as part of the Mothercare building on Newgate Street, Bishop Auckland, caved in.

Durham County Council, which owns the building, has been on site since the incident to prevent further collapse.

Structural engineers will assess the debris after demolition to establish the cause of the original collapse.

Stuart Timmiss, from the council said: "I very much hope that, once this task is complete, we will be far better placed to judge why the roof caved in the way it did."

No-one was injured in the incident, but the area was cordoned off to allow a structural survey, and the shop has been closed since.

The Mothercare store has been on the same site for 30 years.
