Driver 'taken ill' before dry-stone wall crash near Stanhope

A man died when his car crashed into a dry-stone wall in County Durham after apparently becoming ill at the wheel.

The 73-year-old, from Ireshopburn, near Stanhope, was driving a Mitsubishi Lancer on the A689 near Eastgate when the incident happened on Wednesday.

Durham Police said the man, who has not been named, was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics.

A force spokesman appealed for witnesses who were in the area at the time to come forward.
