Stockton councillors agree allowance cut

Councillors in Stockton have agreed to take a reduction in their allowances.

The decision was taken on the recommendation of an independent panel appointed to review the current system.

Special responsibility allowances paid to the mayor, council leader, their deputies, and the leaders of each political group are to be cut by 4%.

Other councillors' basic allowances are to be frozen. It is estimated that the cuts will save the council a total of £34,000 a year.
