The body of Det Ch Supt Stewart Swinson, head of crime with Cleveland Police, was found near Yarm High Street, on 20 March.

There were no suspicious circumstances surrounding the 47-year-old's death, but it has emerged he had been suffering from depression.

More than 200 people attended the service at St Mary Magdalene Church in Yarm.

Officers from the mounted section escorted the cortege to the church, and colleagues made up a guard of honour at the entrance.

During the service, tributes were paid to a man described as devoted to his family and dedicated to his job.

Mr Swinson, who had been with the Cleveland force all his professional career, lived in Yarm and was married with a 15-year-old son and a daughter aged 12.
