Josephine Smith dies a week after A1 crash

A passenger in a car which was in collision with a truck on the A1 motorway near Newton Aycliffe has died in hospital, a week after the crash.

Josephine Smith, 84, from Sindsley Court, in the Swinton area of Greater Manchester, was travelling north on 20 June.

The vehicle was being driven by her 52-year-old son, who lives in Newcastle.

Mrs Smith was taken to the James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough where she later died.

A post-mortem test will now take place to establish a cause of death.
