A 52-year-old man was airlifted to hospital after suffering injuries at a County Durham quarry.

Great North Air Ambulance said they treated the man for chest, back and abdominal injuries after he was crushed by a crane load on Wednesday afternoon.

The Health and Safety Executive said the man involved was a contractor at Coxhoe quarry and it was making preliminary inquiries.

He was treated at the scene then flown to hospital in Middlesbrough.

An ambulance spokesman said he was in a stable condition.
