A man has been arrested by police investigating the murder of a woman in County Durham.

Pamela Turner was found injured by officers called to her flat on Friday in Springhill, Darlington, following reports of a stabbing.

The 61-year-old was taken to Middlesbrough's James Cook University Hospital but died. A post-mortem examination will be held later.

Police are questioning a 61-year-old Darlington man on suspicion of murder.

A Durham Police spokeswoman said Mrs Turner, the mother of two adult daughters, lived alone at the property.

She added: "It's important that we establish the exact sequence of events leading up to Pamela's death.

"We've already interviewed a number of key witnesses but still need to speak anyone who may have noticed any unusual activity in this area last night or heard any kind of disturbance.

"We will also be speaking to Pamela's family, friends and associates so that we can build up a picture of her lifestyle and daily routine."

Forensic officers are at the scene, which has been cordoned off, and house-to-house inquiries are being carried out in the area.
