Port Clarence and Skinningrove get flood defence cash

Homes and businesses on Teesside will benefit from new flood defences as part of a nationwide scheme.

More than £9m will be spent in Port Clarence and £2m will go towards coastal protection in Skinningrove, with construction starting this year.

Phil Welton of the Environment Agency said the Port Clarence work had been brought forward to protect nature and industry from the River Tees.

Nationally, work will start on 93 schemes.

The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs announced a £294m funding package earlier.
