Probe as Sunderland burglar released three months too early
The Prison Service is to investigate how a convicted burglar who told staff he should not be freed, was allowed to go home three months early.
Thomas Campion, 35, from Sunderland, says he told the authorities he should not be freed until the new year.
Despite this he was allowed to leave HMP Northumberland last month.
The Ministry of Justice has confirmed Campion was released in error and said it took the issue "extremely seriously".
A Prison Service spokeswoman added: "An investigation will take place into the circumstances that led to this release."
Campion, from the city's Millfield area, will be returned to jail after treatment in Sunderland Royal Hospital where he is being held under police guard.
He was jailed for 15 months after pleading guilty to carrying out a burglary in April.
