Middlesbrough fire: Householder believed dead

A body has been found by firefighters tackling a large blaze at a house in Middlesbrough.

The fire, at a property in Burlam Road, was described as "well developed" by the time emergency services arrived at the scene at about 10:21 GMT.

No details of the casualty have as yet been released, but it is believed the person was the only occupant of the detached property.

Police and the fire service are investigating the cause of the fire.

A spokesman for Cleveland Fire Brigade said: "Two appliances from Middlesbrough Station and one from Thornaby attended. The first appliance was on scene within five minutes.

"Crews were presented with a well-developed fire on the ground floor of the detached property and tackled the fire using breathing apparatus and hose reels.

"Sadly one casualty was located in the property who was declared dead at the scene."
