An open verdict has been recorded at the inquest on a teacher whose body was found washed up on a County Durham beach two weeks after he disappeared.

Mark Bushnell, deputy head at Durham School, had been missing from his Durham City home since on 9 March.

The 50-year-old's car was found at a cliff-top car park and his body was found at Blackhall Rocks, near Peterlee, two weeks later.

The father-of-three died by drowning, the inquest at Crook heard.

Coronor Andrew Tweddle said he could not be certain whether Mr Bushnell had killed himself or had died accidentally.

Mr Bushnell's wife, Joanna, stressed her husband would never have "hurt himself or his family".
