A man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after a gun attack on a van in Teesside.

A Vauxhall Vivaro van was found overturned on the eastbound carriageway of the A66 near South Bank at about 23:45 BST on Friday, police said.

Two people, one possibly injured, were seen leaving before police arrived.

Officers believe it was a targeted attack and could be linked to two house fires in Redcar that happened around the same time and led to arrests.

A 27-year-old local man was arrested in connection with the suspected van shooting and bailed pending further inquiries.

Three men aged 25, 38 and 60 from the Manchester area were arrested and bailed in connection with the house fires, which took place on Steel Crescent and Resource Close.

The van was found with extensive damage, which police believe was caused by a firearm.

Officers think it may have been involved in a high-speed pursuit with another vehicle before it was overturned.
